Linked in Photo

How do I go about selecting an appropriate photo for my linked in and other digital profiles?

Great question! Your social photos are a big part of your visual branding. The key is to ensure you have consistent and professional pictures of you across different social profiles.

If you can, getting a professional headshot is best. Remember, this is the first look recruiters and hiring managers will get to see, so you want it to be good.

If you want to pick from an existing photo, here are some tips for what to look for in a photo that will best represent you:

Clarity. Use clear and in-focus photos.
Lighting. Ensure that the lighting makes your face visible (try to avoid taking a picture in a dark corner)
Hair. Well-cut and well-styled hair always looks professional.
Eyes. Look directly in the camera.
Eyewear. Think twice (or three times) about wearing sunglasses, and remove eyeglasses before a photo unless it’s a part of your visual brand.
Facial Makeup. Use a light touch on makeup so that it looks natural.
Clothing and jewelry. Dress for the next level of your career. Women should avoid statement necklaces and sparkly jewelry (unless looking for a job designing statement necklaces or sparkly jewelry) for their photos.

Oh, and please, no duck-faced selfies.

    Say cheese!
